Interstate Batteries offers tips for the first ride of the season

Dallas, Texas—As the air grows warmer and the days grow longer, the lure of the open road gains appeal. But, before drivers dust off their motorcycle, ATV or personal watercraft for that first ride, Interstate Batteries is encouraging them to take some preventive measures.
“After a long winter, owners of powersports toys jump on the opportunity to break out their fun,“ said Gale Kimbrough, Technical Services Manager with Interstate Batteries. ”But, months of cold temperatures and inactivity can take a toll on their battery, and possibly result in a no-start situation. Powersports vehicles must be properly prepared to take on the speed and impact of the road or water.”
Kimbrough goes on to note that not performing a post-winter maintenance check could result in harm to the vehicle, or even the driver. Kimbrough recommends that drivers use the following checklist to ensure that their powersports vehicle is in optimal driving condition for the spring season:
- Check battery—Look for corrosion on terminals and test battery for starting capability. If needed, charge or replace the battery. For optimal performance, maintain batteries year-round on a trickle charger.
- Check oil and other lubricants—Run fingers or a cloth along lines to check for leakage. Examine ground where the machine has stood for pools of oil.
- Check tire pressure and wear—Examine tread for any imperfections. Double check the owner's manual to verify that pressure is within the manufacturer's recommended range.
- Check that all lights are operating properly—Ensure proper placement of the headlamp or headlights. Turning and brake indicators as well as tail lights should also be assessed.
- Check brake fluid level and pad/shoes for wear—Test brakes to ensure they are in proper working order. Check width and surface of linings.
- Recycle spent batteries—Motorcycle batteries are lead-acid batteries and should never be thrown away. Ask your local Interstate Batteries distributor about recycling opportunities.
“Taking a few simple steps can save drivers the burden of paying for costly, unnecessary repairs,” said Kimbrough. “They have a personal responsibility to themselves and those around them to ensure that their powersports vehicle is in prime performance mode.” Interstate Cycle-Tron PowerSports batteries offer the ultimate power boost to keep outdoor fun moving.
